The Cologne-based company hylane is now providing its customers with DEKRA-approved CO2 certificates for the hydrogen trucks it rents out. These are the first verified CO2 certificates to be issued for hydrogen trucks in Germany. These certificates include the total CO2 emissions, which take into account both the operation of the vehicles and the production and supply of the hydrogen. hylane is responsible for calculating the emissions and collecting the necessary data, while DEKRA verifies the data and prepares the certificates. The CO2 certificates can be used by the vehicle users for their sustainability reporting and communication with customers and partners.

Transparency through verified CO₂ certificates

With the CO₂ certificates, hylane aims to provide its customers with complete transparency about the CO₂ balance of the hydrogen trucks used. The specified values can be used for sustainability reports. While the vehicles do not emit CO₂ during operation (tank-to-wheel), emissions occur during the production and provision of hydrogen (well-to-tank). Depending on the production method, hydrogen emissions vary – green hydrogen causes only 9% of the emissions that occur during the production of gray hydrogen. The customer-specific calculations for the creation of the CO₂ certificates are checked by DEKRA Assurance Services GmbH and accepted by auditors. In the coming weeks, hylane will gradually hand over the certificates for the year 2024 to its tenants.

Sara Schiffer, Managing Director of hylane: "With the CO₂ certificates, we support our tenants in documenting their sustainability goals in a measurable and transparent manner. At the same time, we enable them to make their CO₂ savings visible – whether to their customers, partners, employees, or in their sustainability reports."

Detailed CO₂ certificate

To create the CO₂ certificates, hylane collects and aggregates data on hydrogen production and distribution as well as vehicle use. The CO₂ certificates divide the emissions into well-to-tank and tank-to-wheel emissions. For vehicles with refrigerated boxes, emissions from refrigerant losses are also taken into account. For full transparency, the CO₂ certificate also includes a reference scenario that shows the well-to-wheel emissions of a comparable diesel vehicle. This allows the CO₂ emissions to be determined in comparison to diesel trucks.

Katharina Fetzer, Head of IT at hylane: "Our CO₂ certificates offer our customers complete transparency about the CO₂ balance of their hydrogen trucks. By clearly breaking down the emissions into well-to-tank, tank-to-wheel, and refrigerant losses, we rely on a precise representation that leaves no room for greenwashing accusations."

DEKRA validates hylane's CO₂ calculations

hylane's CO₂ calculations are based on reliable, directly collected data, including the amounts of hydrogen refueled and kilometers driven. In an official validation statement, DEKRA certifies that the calculation logic complies with ISO standard 14083 and the GLEC framework. Based on this, DEKRA issues CO₂ certificates for hylane's customers.

Peter Paul Ruschin, Head of Sustainability Services at DEKRA Assurance Services GmbH: "We are pleased that we can support hylane as a neutral third party in creating transparency for their customers. Verified information about the emissions generated by transport with hydrogen trucks is particularly important for such a relevant field as the decarbonization of the transport sector. hylane plays a key role in this by performing the calculations with primary data."

Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD)

hylane's CO₂ certificates can be used for greenhouse gas accounting, an integral part of sustainability reporting under the CSRD directive. The CSRD is a new EU regulation that significantly strengthens and standardizes corporate sustainability reporting requirements. Approximately 50,000 companies in the EU, including around 15,000 in Germany, are subject to this directive. Under the CSRD, companies must provide detailed sustainability reports covering environmental, social, and governance factors. These reports must adhere to uniform standards, undergo external audits, and be published digitally. hylane's CO₂ certificate helps companies document the use of their hydrogen trucks in a way that aligns with CSRD reporting requirements.
